Volunteer Roles

Volunteers are an integral part of Derby Refugee Forum and we have a friendly team who support and help with all the services that we offer. Our volunteering days are Tuesday and Thursday each week and our volunteer roles can be seen below. As we are a small organisation, we are not able to offer volunteer roles at all times. Volunteer Advisor

About the Role

Support service users on a one-to-one basis, either independently or with an interpreter.

  • Help individuals resolve issues, access information, and signpost them to relevant organisations.
  • Provide advice on a range of topics, including managing bills and accessing services
  • Contact external agencies on behalf of clients by phone, email, or letter where appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with care.

Person specification

  • A friendly, approachable, and welcoming attitude.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • The ability to think through problems and work towards positive outcomes.
  • A second language is an advantage, but not essential.

Volunteer Interpreter

About the Role

  • Help service users access basic information by bridging language barriers.
  • Provide interpretation support to Volunteer Advisors during drop-in advice sessions.
  • Assist with interpretation during workshops, events, and group activities.
  • Support with translating documents, posters, and other materials used within the centre.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times when dealing with sensitive information.

Person specification

  • A welcoming, patient, and supportive attitude.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Fluency in English and at least one additional language (e.g. Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi, Tigrinya, Amharic).
  • Flexibility to support different activities and areas of the Centre as required.

Volunteer Admin Assistant

About the Role

  • Update records and input data accurately
  • Website, Leaflets / posters
  • Maintain and organise both paper and electronic filing systems so information can be easily accessed.
  • Assist with producing reports
  • Assist with registration

Person specification

  • A welcoming and approachable attitude.
  • Strong IT skills
  • Experience using Office
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to support different projects and areas of the Centre as needed.

Kitchen Assistant

About the Role

  • Serve refreshments in the kitchen
  • Help set up and organise the downstairs space for activities, events and workshops.
  • Keep the kitchen clean, tidy, and presentable

Person specification

  • A friendly, welcoming attitude with good communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Flexibility to support different areas and activities within the Centre as required.
  • A second language may be an advantage. *lighten it*

Volunteer Tutor

About the Role

  • Support refugees and asylum seekers with English language learning and other educational needs.
  • Deliver one-to-one or small group tutoring sessions.
  • Encourage learners to build confidence and develop new skills.
  • Help create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Person Specification

  • Patient, friendly, and supportive.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to explain information clearly.
  • Reliable and organised.
  • A commitment to supporting people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous teaching or tutoring experience is desirable but not essential.

General Information

All volunteers must follow organisational policies and procedures:

  • A regular commitment is required to ensure continuity of service.
  • Sessions take place on Tuesdays or Thursdays, for a full or half day.
  • Hours are 9:45am–4:30pm at the Bosnian & Herzegovina Community Centre.
  • A DBS check will be required.
